Among the 43 innovative projects out of 226 applications submitted for the “L’Impresa fa Cultura” call issued by the Lazio Region to promote, through the use of new technologies, the cultural heritage of Lazio and improve networking among cultural venues, support artists and creative craftsmanship, set up new permanent cultural spaces, organize events, performances, art exhibitions, and create artistic and educational workshops, our proposal aims to offer “New Modes of Visiting the Museum of Ancient Sculpture ‘Giovanni Barracco’ in Rome.”
A project co-financed by the European Union that, thanks to the use of Li-Fi technology, will create illuminated paths at the “Museum of Ancient Sculpture ‘Giovanni Barracco’ in Rome,” illuminated by LED spotlights capable of providing information and images to offer users a unique experience.
A journey guided by the light of innovation into the world of ancient sculpture and decorative art from Cyprus, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Assyria, Phoenicia, Etruria, Rome, and Greece.
The Project
The project involves the implementation of “New Modes of Visiting the Museum of Ancient Sculpture ‘Giovanni Barracco’ in Rome.” The site exhibits about 400 works ranging from Cypriot art to Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Assyrian, Phoenician, Etruscan, and Roman sculptures, including original sculptures and copies from Roman schools of Greek sculpture from the 5th century, funerary sculptures of Greek origin, ceramics attributed to Alexander the Great, and medieval decorative art. All of this is embedded in an exhibition path spread across 9 rooms on three floors.
As the exhibition space is currently quite limited compared to the number of works exhibited, we have decided to use Li-Fi to enhance the value of the collections.
An Innovative Project for the Barracco Museum
Purpose
The use of Li-Fi technology in the Barracco Museum involves the definition and creation of an internally lit pathway illuminated by Li-Fi spotlights. These spotlights will be positioned near the artworks, providing a safe path even for disabled individuals.
The Li-Fi spotlight, coupled with a Li-Fi router, emits modulated light associated with a unique code. Receiver devices near the spotlights can receive the code and, through a dedicated app, associate it with multimedia content describing the artwork or the visiting path.
Results
Thanks to Li-Fi, it will be possible to create a flexible and reconfigurable indoor geolocation system, allowing visitors to explore the museum with the support of multimedia content (photos, videos, infographics, etc.) that greatly enriches the visitor’s experience.
In parallel with the project management, a communication plan will be developed, focusing on explaining the new solution and guiding visitors through the exhibition points using appropriate installation supports, designed in graphics and supported by suitable materials to ensure a complete visit to the entire museum.
Support Received
Our company participates within a Temporary Business Association (ATI) composed of To-Be Srl (the lead company of the ATI) and DB Ingegneria dell’immagine Srl, a leading company in the design and production of graphic products for communication and advertising.
For this project, the ATI has been awarded a regional grant of €221,000.
Work in Progress
This is a highly innovative solution for the “Giovanni Barracco” Museum of Ancient Sculpture, which will be among the first in the world to implement a solution based on Li-Fi technology.
